Problem
Air handling units with economizer operation control the flow of return and outside air streams to achieve an established supply air temperature. However, economizer operation is often abandoned when outside air temperatures approach the freeze stat set point and freeze-stats begin tripping. Therefore, instead of using the free cooling of the outside air, mechanical cooling is required to maintain designed supply air temperature. The end result is a significant increase in system energy costs.
Mixing: The Solution
By mixing the return and outside air streams, the nusiance freeze stat trips can be eliminated. Therefore, the system can take advantage of prime conditions for operating in econimizer mode (i.e. temperatures in the 30s and 40s F). The end result of providing mixing in these systems is significant reduction in energy costs.
