Problem
Sensor inaccuracies refer to the inability of sensors to get a true reading of the air temperatures within the plenum. Sensor inaccuracies occur in both hot and cold climates, winter and summer, as long as there is a temperature differential between the return and outside air streams. If the true temperature/energy balance of the air stream is not accurately measured, the control system for the air handling unit will not control the system components correctly. This will result in air being delivered that is too hot or cold, as well as wasted energy in improperly heating or cooling the ventilation air.
Mixing: The Solution
If the return and outside air streams are mixed to achieve a consistent air temperature and velocity, the temperature control system will work as designed. The end result is significant energy savings. For example, an energy savings of about 18 percent can be realized in an air handling unit by correcting the mixed air temperature sensor variation from +/-10°F to +/-6°F.
